Jean Bosco's Journey to Climate Resilience

Back to News

In the hills of Murambi Sector, Karongi District, 32-year-old father of three Jean Bosco Habineza once faced an uncertain future, struggling with daily food insecurity and financial stress despite holding a secondary diploma in accounting. His life transformed in 2024 after joining the Climate Just Programme—implemented by DUTERIMBERE ONG in partnership with Trócaire and funded by the Scottish Government’s Climate Justice Fund—where he gained practical training in climate-smart agriculture, financial literacy, and livestock management. Rather than spending his training transport allowance, Jean Bosco made the strategic decision to buy a pig for RWF 45,000, which rapidly multiplied into sales worth hundreds of thousands of Rwandan francs. By reinvesting his profits, participating in a Village Savings and Loan Group (VSLG), and earning wages as a team leader in local terrace construction, he expanded his farm to include a dairy cow valued at RWF 570,000 as well as poultry, growing his total livestock assets to approximately RWF 1,320,000. Today, Jean Bosco serves as a youth champion in his community, illustrating how empowering vulnerable households with skills, financial inclusion, and climate justice restores dignity, secures family nutrition, and creates lasting resilience across Rwanda.
